How does the Youtube algorithm work?

Source: HootSuite

Youtube’s algorithm takes into account your video watching patterns, i.e. the amount of time you spent on each video, whether you liked or disliked the video, and if you finished the video or not. These factors tell the youtube algorithm if you would like to see similar videos or not.

What is Confirmation Bias?

From Britannica, confirmation bias, the tendency to process information by looking for, or interpreting, information that is consistent with one’s existing beliefs. This biased approach to decision-making is largely unintentional and often results in ignoring inconsistent information.

Youtube algorithm led confirmation bias in action

Step 1. You watch a video of whether Narendra Modi is right/wrong for India. The source of the video doesn’t matter. Your friend could’ve shared this video, or it could’ve been recommended by youtube to begin with.

Step 2. You’re recommended similar videos that further enforce your existing belief.

Step 3. Your belief becomes stronger.

Repeat Steps 2 & 3 until your belief becomes your reality.

Aftermath — Polarisation

The dangerous aftermath of this reinforcing system is a polarised population. A population that holds strong political and lifestyle beliefs, living in an echo chamber of ideas.

Solution

  1. Challenge your existing views by searching for opposing views. Hearing the other side with minimum preconceived notions.

2. Take control, click Don’t recommend channel if you feel you’re falling into a rabbit hole.

3. Check out their.tube and find out what polarised feeds look like.
